The much-vaunted superfood doesn’t live up to its name. The fruits, seeds and grasses, which are full of health-promoting substances, are one thing above all – expensive. The testers of the consumer protection magazine “Konsument” have chia seeds,

Goji berries

and Co. carefully examined. The result: superfoods are just like any other food.

Because the vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances can also be found in local foods. What’s more: Harvesting too early, heavy processing or preparation for transport and weeks of storage in shipping containers are at the expense of the sensitive ingredients. The perishable acai berries can only be transported to Europe frozen, as pulp (processed, production-ready fiber, note) or freeze-dried. This means that there is often only environmentally harmful transport by plane.

Banned pesticides discovered in Europe

When buying, it should be ensured that the goods are residue-controlled, advise consumer advocates. In the case of Chinese goji berries, for example, high levels of pesticides have been found several times. In the case of chia seeds, there are references to the use of weed killers, which are banned in Europe. “Consuming certain substances in concentrated, isolated form is generally not advisable because of possible undesirable effects.123papers If you have superfood, it is best to eat whole fruits and avoid powder and capsules,” writes “Konsument”.

Flaxseed serves the same purpose

Chia seeds, for example, are said to be superior to other foods because of their high fiber, protein and mineral content. The healing seeds of the Maya are also said to promote digestion, regulate blood sugar and alleviate joint pain and heartburn. Chia seeds are currently between nine and 57 per kilogram. It could also be cheaper. The good old flaxseed provides roughly the same amount of protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. And: It only costs three to 19 euros per kilogram.

Acai berries – cheaper too

Acai berries are similarly expensive. The fruits of a palm species contain many minerals, especially a lot of calcium, as well as anthocyanins, which are praised as radical scavengers (dark plant pigments, note). The acai powder costs between 160 and 262 euros per kilogram. In Austria, blackberries, elderberries, blueberries, chokeberries, cherries, red grapes or even red cabbage could easily be used. These fruits and vegetables also contain plenty of color and are nowhere near as expensive. And the expensive goji berries with their high vitamin C content could even be grown in Austria, as these wolfberry bushes also thrive in this country.

In addition to the medication, the doctors at the hospital also gave me a supplement. Then I wanted to get it on prescription from the doctor, but the costs are not covered by the WGKK, it would have to be paid for myself. But it’s very expensive !! Then I heard about the goji berries and bought them from “common sense”. 100g approx. 5 euros. The taste of these berries ……

…. you have to get used to it first, so you don’t eat too much of it at once. At some point I stopped buying it because I don’t know how much I have to eat for it to work. And I have nothing for the pointless.
